Program Description: 

Neurological surgery is a branch of medical sciences in which students study all fields of central/peripheral nervous system disorders, autonomic nervous system, skull, spine, and other supporting structures and systems and are involved in diagnosis, surgical and nonsurgical management, care and rehabilitation of different types of related diseases.

Neurosurgery was established in Iran in 1951 and since then the curriculum has undergone many changes parallel to this specialty developments in the world.

It is necessary that the curriculum of various programs be reviewed every few years due to constant advances in science and technology, environmental changes, changing pattern of diseases, and increase in accidents in the world (many of which lead to brain and spinal cord injuries); and, considerable developments in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in various fields, including neurosurgery.

To review the neurosurgery program curriculum, multiple committees participated and the current curriculum is the result of their hard intellectual works.


The mission of this course is to train specialists who are informed of updated scientific information, competent, responsive, and sensitive to the health of individuals and society in the specialized field of vascular surgery and will provide the society with their expertise in terms of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, education, and research.
At the end of the program learners will be competent in the following Procedural Skills (Diagnostic Therapeutic Procedures) skills:

1. Diagnostic procedures

• The brain (biopsy of the brain, blood vessels, skull)

• Vertebral column and spinal cord (such as lumbar puncture, spinal biopsy)

• Peripheral nerves (such as nerve biopsy) 

2. Taking care of and following-up patients’ treatment in ICU

3. Surgical procedures of the brain, vertebral column and peripheral nerves

A. Emergency cases

• Reconstruction of different types of pressure on nerve tissue

• Reconstruction of skull and vertebral column fractures

• Evacuation of hematoma

• Brain decompression

• Traction of vertebral column

B. Selected cases:

• Reconstruction of congenital abnormalities

• Treatment of various types of lesions: 

o degenerative infectious

o tumoral

o functional

o vascular


.The Neurosurgery (Neurological Surgery) program lasts at least 5 years

Admission Requirements

General Requirement: To apply for this program, you will need to fulfill a number of requirements, which can be found in the Graduate Admission Requirements.

Specific Requiremetns: Degree in General Physicians (M.D) or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) by one of the Iranian or foreign universities.

The eligible candidate should have successfully completed an approved general physician program and should be proficient in English or Persian.

Admission Deadline

Tehran University of Medical Sciences has a rolling application system and reviews student applications all year round.

However, the deadline for the September intake is June 31.
