TUMS Appraise To Raise Group has held the first Online Journal Club in the School of Dentistry

The first TUMS Online Journal Club was held on Sunday, May 10th 2020 at 10:00 AM (Tehran local time), 5:30 AM (GMT) with collaboration of Endodontics Department, School of Dentistry. According to Dr. Mohammad H. Nekoofar, Moderator of the session and Leader of Appraise To Raise Group, this journal club discussed an article entitled “Efficacy of Local Anaesthetic Solutions on the Success of Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block in Patients With Irreversible Pulpitis: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials” and saw the presence of Prof. Dr. Nagendrababu Venkateshbabu, the first author of the article. He is a teaching faculty in Division of Clinical Dentistry and Head of Dental Skill Centre at School of Dentistry, International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

First. Dr. Arvin Rezaei, presenter of the session and resident of Endodontics Department started the session expressing his condolences on passing of Prof. Ashofteh Yazdi, Professor of Endodontics in TUMS. May he rest in peace and God bless his soul.

During this session, attendees discussed the management of pain during root canal treatment and the anaesthetic solution that would provide the best pulpal anesthesia for inferior alveolar nerve blocks (IANB) treating mandibular teeth with irreversible pulpitis. Based on the evidence from the randomized clinical trials included in the article under review, mepivacaine with epinephrine demonstrated the highest probability of providing effective pulpal anesthesia using IANB for teeth with irreversible pulpitis compared to prilocaine, articaine, bupivacaine and lidocaine.

As the discussion was fierce, attendees decided to have another session and continue the exchange of views. Therefore, the second online journal club was held on Sunday May 17th, to appraise the aforementioned article.

At the end of the second session, Prof. Dr. Nagendrababu Venkateshbabu was awarded a certificate of appreciation by TUMS and has been assigned as TUMS Visiting Professor for 3 years.
