New Season of Cooperation Launches for TUMS & Jimma University

On Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016 a delegation from Jimma University headed by the University President, had a meeting with Dr. Ali Jafarian, TUMS Chancellor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and signed a Memorandum of Understanding for promoting the initiation of international collaborations between both universities.

Dr. Jafarian, Chancellor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Dr. Kheradmand, vice-chancellor for Global Strategies & International Affairs, Dr. Jalili, Vice-Chancellor for Education, Dr. Nekoofar, Director of International Relations, Accreditation & ranking, Dr. Sharifi-yazdi, Vice-Dean for International Affairs of School of Allied Medical Sciences, Dr. Shahmoradi, Faculty member of School of Allied Medical Sciences, Prof. Fikre Lemessa, President of Jimma University (JU) and Mr. Ermyas Admasu Wolde, Director of International Relations of JU were the attendees of this meeting.

At the beginning, as an introduction to JU, Mr. Ermyas Admasu Wolde stated that JU is one of 10 top universities in Ethiopia. JU’s establishment dates back to 1999, and now includes 7 colleges, one institute and one school of graduate studies. He pointed out that over 40000 students are studying in JU, of which over 67% are in postgraduate and the rest are in undergraduate degrees.

He mentioned the College of Health Science is one of the oldest colleges at JU and it includes several departments, such as Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, etc.

Mr. Ermyas also declared the expectations beyond collaboration with TUMS are as below:

  • Joint and clinical and community health  researches/projects
  • Collaboration in management  of clinical services of Teaching Referral Hospital
  • Exchange of staff  for short term training and sharing of knowledge and experience
  • Staff capacity building at a MA, PHD, specialty and sub specialty  level
  • Sharing of knowledge and experience in hospital management
  • Hosting Joint conferences  and scientific forums
  • Joint academic programs

According to their visits of schools of TUMS, Prof. Fikre Lemessa said “TUMS has advanced facilities and expert human resources I hope that this potentials can extend to mutual collaborations.” He also stated that the lack of expertise in JU’s young department of dentistry is considerable issue which can be solved through collaboration with TUMS faculty members.

After JU’s presentation, Dr. Jafarian expressed that recognition of common interests of both universities can pave the way of future collaborations. “These common interests can be put into action through joint researches and joint projects.” He added.

Moreover, he mentioned that TUMS gates are open towards JU students who are talented and fascinated by continuing their education in IRAN. He stated that TUMS is ready to hold workshops for JU students and faculty members. Dr. Jafarian said moving forward the mutual collaboration can lead to an MoA between JU & TUMS and as a result TUMS can consider a number of fixed seats for JU students at TUMS.

Afterwards, Dr. Kheradmand added that the details of international programs are available through GSIA website. He also revealed that TUMS is ready to share its experiences with JU.

At the end of this meeting a general MoU was signed by Dr. Jafarian on behalf of TUMS and Prof. Fikre Lemessa on behalf of JU.

During the three days of staying of JU delegation at TUMS, they visited Schools of Traditional Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing & Midwifery and Public Health. They also visited Shariati Hospital, Children Medical Center Hospital and Iranian National Museum of History of Medical Sciences.

While visiting Children Medical Center Hospital, an MoU were signed by Dr. Rezaei on behalf of USERN and Prof. Fikre Lemessa on behalf of JU.
