Short Biography
Dr Mujeeb Hoosen is the Coordinator of Unani Tibb at the School of Natural Medicine, Faculty of Community and Health Sciences, University of the Western Cape in South Africa. He has been actively involved in the training, practice, research and promotion of Unani Tibb for more than a decade in South Africa. He was a previous chairperson of the South African Tibb Association and currently continues to support the association's dedication to Unani Tibb healthcare.
Dr Hoosen has contributed significantly to the norms, standards and regulation of Unani Tibb and Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) at institutional, association, national and global level. Since 2018 he has served as an expert member, rapporteur, moderator, technical advisor and peer reviewer to several World Health Organization (WHO) committees for TCIM. In 2023, he was nominated by WHO as a Field-Testing Coordinator for ICD-11 for Traditional Medicine in South Africa. These WHO projects led to several benchmark publications for global implementation.
Dr Hoosen is also an Unani Tibb educator and clinical research consultant for the Ibn Sina Institute of Tibb. He has conducted several healthy living community projects based on the holistic healing principles of Unani Tibb and Tibb an Nabawi (Prophetic Medicine) for both the education and social sectors. He has conducted several Unani Tibb awareness programs for all types of media in South Africa. His research work on various Unani Tibb topics has been presented at both national and international conferences as well as published in internationally recognized peer reviewed journals.
Dr Hoosen currently serves on several international editorial advisory boards for TCIM. His research areas of interest are spirituality, spiritual care, Tibb an Nabawi, Unani Tibb therapeutics and health promotion.
He has represented South Africa as an international delegate at several international scientific events in many countries.
