Clinical Pharmacy Specialty (Pharmacotherapy)
Program Description:
Pharmacotherapy or clinical pharmacy or hospital pharmacy is one of the specialty course in the fields of pharmacy that provides patient care in various practice settings, and promotes effective use of medications in the pursuit of health.
In this course, students are involved in the following classes: First aids, therapeutics and pharmacy practice, hospital pharmacy clerkship, clinical pharmacy clerkship. The latter involves small group teaching and clinical case studies in clinical settings.
Objectives:
Train specialist for:
- Monitoring and follow the patient's drug and treatment progression in the hospital especially in chronic disease and in intensive care units by review of patient medical and drug history
- Therapeutic drug-monitoring to prevent drug poisoning and reduce hospitalization
- Consult with the physicians and other medical team such as nursing on how to best medications
- Advise the patient about the best medications and its side effects.
- Investigating of the drug side effects and report them
- Generate and disseminate knowledge to advance patient care, medication safety, disease prevention and treatment, health care cost-effectiveness and quality, and pharmacy education
- Apply new knowledge to develop, evaluate and disseminate innovative health care delivery models, pharmacy education models, and health policies
Duration:
Three or 4 years full-time at two levels of practice of clinical and research.
Admission Requirements
General Reguirements: To apply for this program, you will need to fulfill a number of requirements, which can be found in the Graduate Admission Requirements.
Specific Requiremetn: Degree in Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D.)
Admission Deadline
Tehran University of Medical Sciences has a rolling application system and reviews student applications all year round.
However, the deadline for the September intake is June 31, and the deadline for the February intake is October 31.

Post Graduate Year 1 Residency: Advance Therapeutics, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, and Pathophysiology, biostatistics.
Post Graduate Year 2- 3: Specialized Residency in Critical Care, Gastroenterology, infectious diseases, Nephrology, Cardiology, Pediatrics, Oncology, Endocrinology, Drug Information Center, Psychiatry, general Surgery and Transplantation.
Post Graduate Year -4: Practice related Research (Residency Thesis)
Comprehensive examination:
Students should choose an advisor and write a thesis proposal which should be approved by the graduate committee within the first two years of their studies. Upon the completion of the remedial and required courses and approval of the thesis proposal, students should pass comprehensive examinations (written and oral) in order to be qualified to continue with doctoral work.
Defense of the dissertation prospectus:
Students are required to present and defend their thesis with the approval of faculty committee.
