Our Institute
Introduction
Currently, more than 7 billion people live in the world, and despite the vast scientific advances, many people still suffer from health problems. Poverty, inequality, lack of access to proper health facilities, deaths of people, especially special groups such as mothers and children under 5 years of age, are among the problems faced by health and treatment systems around the world. Currently, more than 6 million children worldwide die annually from preventable causes. More than a third of the world's population lives on less than two dollars a day. In order to solve such problems and respond to the challenges of the health field, various universities around the world have created a global health group, in which interdisciplinary courses with different titles such as global health, public health, and health diplomacy attract students. Iran is also a suitable candidate for strengthening higher education activities in the region in the field of Global Health. For this purpose, at the beginning of 2013, the Faculty of Health of Tehran University of Medical Sciences established the Department of Global Health and Public Policy with the aim of expanding educational and research activities in the field of public health of society and in line with global standards. Based on this, this group will be in charge of programs to expand the public health of the society.
Message from our Director
Welcome to the Center of Excellence for Global Health (CEGH)-TUMS
We live at a critical moment for global health, witnessing a paradigm shift that emphasizes the universal interconnectedness of equity, good governance for health, sociopolitical determinants of health, and quality healthcare. Global challenges, i.e., climate change, war and conflict, and emerging and reemerging diseases, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have accelerated this shift. The need for innovative, tailored solutions to address these complex and complicated health challenges has never been more evident.
The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) of the World Health Organization, encompassing West Asia, Middle-East and North Africa (MENA), faces fundamental issues, e.g., political instability and civil unrest; mass migration, refugees, and asylum seekers’ crisis; water stress and generally low spending on health. Our work aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing our commitment to global health and sustainability.
As a pioneer institution in Iran and the region, CEGH, in close collaboration with our world-class partners and allies, is dedicated to leading the essential transformations needed to improve citizens’ well-being and health. Our global partnerships with international organizations, universities, and research institutions highlight CEGH’s global reach and influence, fostering collaborative efforts to tackle health challenges. By focusing on the intersection of health and other policies and through fostering an enabling environment for excellence in global health education, research, advocacy and service, CEGH is committed to contribute to sustainable health development in Iran, the region and worldwide.
We believe in health as the pillar of humanity and strongly advocate for public policies centered on health and well-being to build sustainable societies. We are dedicated to engaging local communities in health promotion and disease prevention initiatives, demonstrating our commitment to grassroots-level impact. Based in Tehran, the beautiful capital of Iran, and affiliated with the first rank School of Public Health in the country at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), we are well-equipped to create a healthier, more equitable and sustainable world for all together with you.
I invite you to join us on this exciting journey. Together and through meaningful partnership, let us be United for Global Citizens’ Health and Well-being.
