Professional Biography:

Professor Harry A. Whitaker is currently the professor of Psychological Science at Northern Michigan University, since 1997.

Regarding his academic activities, he has formerly been professor of Psychology at l’Université de Québec à Montréal and at the University of Rochester, professor of neuroscience at the University of North Dakota and professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Maryland.

He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1969.

His experience in teaching includes courses in Cognitive Neuroscience, Individual Differences and History of Psychology.

Professor Harry A. Whitaker is the author of over 125 articles, book chapters and reviews in cognitive neuroscience, neuropsychology, neurolinguistics, neurology and the history of psychology.

In 1986 he was the elected fellow of the American Psychological Association’s Division 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) and Division 26 (History) in 1997.

He was editor of “Brain, Mind and Medicine: Neuroscience in the 18th Century”, with C. Smith and S. Finger, published by Springer in 2007, founding editor of the journals “Brain & Language” in 1974 and “Brain & Cognition” in 1982.

He was also an editor of the “Concise Encyclopedia of Brain and Language” in 2009 and “Handbook of the Neuroscience of Language”, with B. Stemmer, in 2008, both published by Elsevier.

Furthermore, he was an area editor of Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology and Language of the International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences 2nd edition, published by Elsevier in 2013.

He currently acts as a co-editor of the journal “Lingua”, and consulting editor for the journal “The Mental Lexicon”. 

On August, 2017 Prof. Whitaker was presented with the TUMS Distinguished Visiting Professor Title for the duration of 2017-2020 by Head of Speech Therapy Department.

During his presence at TUMS, he has visited the School of Rehabilitation. He is now consult in research at speech therapy department of that school and also he is collaborating with the school to provid "Clinical and Experimental Neurolinguistics" curriculum.
