Professional Biography:

Prof. Leonardo Antonio Sechi graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of Sassari November 9 1989, defending a thesis entitled: "Uptake of arylsulfatase A in a lymphoblastoid cell line deficient enzyme" supervisor Prof. Cesare Danesino. He specialized in Microbiology and Virology with 50/50 and honors from the University of Sassari in 1993.

Since 1994 under the guidance of Prof. Giovanni Fadda and Prof. Stefania Zanetti, he has contributed to the formation and operation of the laboratory of mycobacteria of the Section of Experimental and Clinical Microbiology of the Department of Biomedical Sciences where he developed methods of molecular biology for the identification of mycobacteria tuberculosis and not. Deals with the Chlamidie lab run spp. under the guidance of Prof. Zanetti where has developed molecular diagnostic techniques for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis in different clinical specimens. Also it dealt with the problem of diagnosis and drug resistance related to intra and extracellular bacteria.

The research of Professor Leonardo A. Sechi is witnessed by more than 300 publications.

On August 31, 2014 Professor Leonardo A. Sechi was presented with the TUMS Distinguished Visiting Professor Title by head of Microbiology Department of School of Medicine. Since then, his contribution to TUMS has countined for duration of nine years.

On August 24-25, 2014 prof. Sechi was invited to the 15th Iranian and International Congress of Microbiology. While staying he visits school of medicine of TUMS and he also had a meeting with the faculty members of TUMS School of Medicine, Dr. Feizabadi (Scientific Secretary of the 15th International Congress of Microbiology), Dr. Mirsalehian (Head of the Department of Microbiology of TUMS School of Medicine), Dr. Tabrizi (Director of International Relations of TUMS School of Medicine).

 

The meeting emphasized importance of joint programs between Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the University of Sassari in Italy, and both universities can exchange three PhD students per year.  The importance of exchanging Ph.D and Post Doctoral Students and also exchanging faculty members for short-term courses between Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the University of Sassari in Italy was discussed. 

 

The meeting was concluded by planning a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two universities. The signatories emphasized on making the signed MoUs for the purpose of developing scientific and research collaborations practical. According to the MoU, the universities will collaborate in the fields of joint publications, seminars, etc.

Prof. Sechi delivered a lecture entitled “The role of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis in autoimmune diseases” at the 15th Iranian and International Congress of Microbiology.
