Program and Activities

Activity # 1: Supervising the process of designing the new curricula

Introduction
We attempt to supervise the design process of a new curriculum according to Upstream documents and moving toward competency - based education.
According to the new curriculum establishment by Law at TUMS', any department, center or school that intends to submit a new curriculum must have a new curriculum evaluated and approved by the EDC.

Purposes
•    Designing new curricula according to the needs assessment results and considering new principles and methods in curriculum planning
•    Improving the quality of new curricula by monitoring the design process and providing expert advice.

Process
Creating new disciplines and curriculum design entails taking into account the various factors involved in the process and is not possible without determining the process steps.
“the new curriculum establishment bylaw” defines the steps of this process and specifies the roles and responsibilities of the various involved institutions.

The steps of the process:
•    Needs assessment: The applicant’s department should examine the extent to which the discipline needs to be established and the problems arising from the lack of the discipline by examining the evidences and documents available and utilizing the views of experts in the field.
•    Completing “application form for new disciplines establishment” & “curriculum planning framework” by applicant department
•    Proposing the fulfilled forms and all related documents to “TUMS vice- chancellor for education” after approval of educational affairs deputy of the faculty.
•    Presenting the documents at the TUMS educational council meeting.
•    Submission of curriculum and related documents to EDC after approval of the educational council.
•    Expert review of forms and documents Considering curriculum design principles and ministerial frameworks as well as completeness of needs assessment and reviewing similar curricula in other countries.
•    Providing specialized advice to improve the quality of the proposed curriculum by curriculum planning division of EDC
•    Implementation of modified changes by the representative of the applicant department / curriculum designer
•    Obtaining EDC's approval and submitting the revised curriculum & related documents to the “TUMS vice- chancellor for education”
•    Submission of the curriculum & other documents to the relevant educational councils of the ministry of health and medical education

Activity # 2: Designing and implementing a comprehensive regulation for Curriculum planning process management at TUMS

Introduction
Curriculum planning process management is particularly important at all levels of the educational program, including curriculum, course plan and Lesson Plan. Designing relevant bylaws can be effective in unifying practice, monitoring existing trends and improving the status quo.

Purposes
•    Managing curriculum planning process and organizing the different levels of curriculum at TUMS
•    Monitoring the Curriculum revision Process
•    Improving the quality of curricula, course plans & lesson plans at TUMS through continuous monitoring and providing appropriate feedback according to the relevant bylaws
•    Establishing “the curriculum committees” in Education Development Offices of the faculties to increase their participation in curriculum development and revision.

Process
Considering “course plans organizing mega plan in TUMS” that is based on Roger Kaufman's six step problem solving model & according to the results of “the Survey on the Status of the Course Plans at TUMS”, designing relevant bylaws is one of the executive priorities and will be on the agenda of this unit. The process steps are as follows:
After preparing the initial draft, the bylaw will be reviewed by a panel of experts in the field of curriculum planning and medical education. A revised copy will then be sent to the educational deputies of the faculties to gather their comments and suggestions. Afterward, comments are applied and “TUMS educational council” checks the bylaw and makes a decision based on members' comments to approve or disapprove the bylaw.
