The session started with a brief welcome and a presentation by Dr. Jafarian about Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The presentation explained the history of the university, its administrative structure, its relation with the government, the current status of the university, its students and academia, TUMS schools and research centers, the quality of its education, as well as Iran’s health insurance.

The Swiss ambassador stated that Switzerland and Iran are a close match regarding the possibility of the mobility of students between the two countries. The prominent universities in Switzerland are two polytechniques in Lausanne and Geneva, as well as the University of Zurich.

Dr. Younesian, TUMS Vice-Chancellor for Research, briefly stated that Tehran University of Medical Sciences has prepared certain facilities and infrastructure to commence future programs for international students, and he asked the Swiss ambassador for possible support from the embassy in order to recruit Swiss students, especially for programs dealing with the topics of environment and air pollution.

The Ambassador advised the TUMS delegate to start discussions and collaborations with Europe, as Europe has been comprised by a network of associations, and all several EU countries are linked to each other via these associations. The situation, he described, is much more optimistic now, and he said that TUMS is in the position of making its choices. According to him, high-ranking Swiss officials and university delegations are interested in coming to Iran which is a great opportunity to introduce them to the Iranian higher education capacities.

Mr. Stephane Rey, the embassy's Charge d'Affaires, stated that one of the best options isto get in touch with the international affairs sections of Swiss governmental organizations such as ministries, and bring together the international offices of relevant Iranian ministries, that of Iranian universities, and the international affairs sections of the Swiss government.

At the end of the meeting, having been presented with certain advertisement items and memorabilia by the TUMS Chancellor, Ambassador Haas clearly announced his readiness to provide Tehran University of Medical Sciences with his support and that of the Swiss Embassy.
