Brief Overview
 

The Digestive Disease Research Institute (DDRI) is located in Shariati Hospital and affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS).

The history of the institute's establishment dates back to 2003, when it began its activities as the first research center for digestive and liver diseases in Iran: "Digestive Disease Research Center (DDRC)".

In 2011, the Digestive Disease Research Center (DDRC) was developed into the Digestive Disease Research Institute (DDRI).

 

The Institute is now comprised of four research centers:

1.   Digestive Diseases Research Center
2.   Digestive Oncology Research Center
3.   Liver and Pancreatobiliary Diseases Research Center
4.   Cell – Based Therapies Research Center

Missions & Goals

 

Research Goals

  • Discovery and dissemination of high-quality medical information and the translation of medical evidence to practice.
  • Establishing a strong foundation for research in the field of gastrointestinal diseases with capacity building and infrastructure development
  • Optimization of clinical research and services, quality assurance and updating of clinical services based on national health care priorities
  • Conversion of research outcomes and results to technology products aimed towards improving health care technology, especially with the production of affordable and available pharmaceutical products in mind

 

 

Educational goals

 

  • To improve medical education, especially at the advanced level (subspecialization) of gastroenterology and liver diseases

  • Providing educational and training opportunities for medical students, researchers, PhD candidates and medical graduates

  • Improving the quality of courses in the field of gastroenterology and liver diseases for optimal training of specialists in this subspecialty

  • Improve the quality of residency and fellowship programs in gastroenterology and liver diseases to train at least 7 faculty members per year

  • Launching the Advanced Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship program in collaboration with Georgetown University and the Mayo Clinic Institute in the United States

  • Offering quality CME programs on a regular basis for alumni specialized in the field of gastroenterology and liver diseases, postdoctoral fellows, as well as professors in this field in collaboration with the Association of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases of Iran

  • Improving the quality of education in the field of digestive and liver diseases for medical students and interns

  • Establishing a unit for the indigenization of novel information / new knowledge in this field and its application to the activities of the Institute

 

 

Treatment goals

 

  • The publication of the most pertinent results and knowledge generated in the field of gastrointestinal diseases through the media network with the ultimate goal of developing awareness in the health sector
  • Providing advanced and quality diagnostic and therapeutic services in the field of digestive and liver diseases
  • Continuing and improving the clinical services of the Institute, which is now the most well-recognized reference center for digestive and liver diseases in the country.
  • Conduct clinical trials which will help develop nationally manufactured pharmaceutical products and medical equipment in order to support their industry in Iran

 

 

Educational products

 

  • Training more than 135 specialists in gastroenterology and liver diseases at the Institute who currently serve as faculty members in Medical Universities across the country

  • Training approximately 25 postdoctoral fellows in Advanced Endoscopic Methods who are active in tier one Medical Universities

  • Developing the content for short-term courses in the field of pediatric digestive disorders of as well as other short-term courses for residents and fellows from other medical universities and scientific centers in the country

 

 

Scientific products

 

  • Conducting the largest cohort study of the Middle East and North Africa in the North-East region of Iran (Golestan) with significant outcomes and results for the international community

  • Publication 1205 scientific articles in prestigious international and national peer-reviewed journals representing the results from research activities carried out by 20 research groups focusing on the 20 most common gastrointestinal and liver disorders

  • Conducting more than 30 clinical trials and publishing their outcomes in internationally renowned journals

  • Launching the largest clinical study of "Poly Pill" for the prevention of chronic diseases (cardiovascular) in the region and beyond

  • The production of two drug products, "Sovodak" for the treatment of hepatitis C, and “Poly Pill” for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disorders (hypertension and dyslipidemia), as a result of the research carried out at the Institute, which have entered the pharmaceutical market of Iran

  • Recognition as the most outstanding research center in the evaluation of all centers nationwide; considerably outperforming other selected research centers

  • Achieving first place in the evaluation of clinical research institutes in 2016, especially in terms of references made to the scientific articles published by the Institute

 

 

National and International Collaborations

 

  • Expansion of collaborative research activities with reputable and accredited academic institutions, research centers and health organizations at national and international levels; The Institute has contributed to 15 major international projects and 300 credible scientific papers.

  • Establishment and foundation of 10 national research networks through conducting studies and projects in collaboration with other scientific and medical centers across the country

  • Launching the inter-center research network between the DDRI and other research centers in the country
