Health Program Lowers Heart Disease Risk in Iran – Study Finds

A new study shows the IraPEN program helped reduce heart disease risk in Iran, but experts
say more improvements are needed.
Key Findings:
✅ The risk of heart disease dropped in both men and women after the program.
✅ Men with high risk (above 10%) decreased from 7.5% to 5.3%.
✅ Women with high risk dropped from 6.1% to 4.7%.
✅ Blood pressure, cholesterol, and other risk factors improved.
✅ Waist size and BMI didn’t change much, especially in women.
The IraPEN program, designed to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD), was tested in four pilot areas
of Iran. Over 160,000 people were screened, and 25,000 were followed for a year. Results showed a
modest but promising reduction in heart disease risk.
While the program showed success, researchers suggest further improvements to make it even more
effective.
Why it matters: Heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. Prevention programs like
IraPEN can save lives and improve public health.
