Success of Physicians at Hakim Pediatric Subspecialty Hospital of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in a Special Surgery on a Premature Newborn

According to the Public Relations Office of Hakim Pediatric Hospital, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, a successful surgery was recently performed on a 30-week premature newborn weighing 1600 grams who was suffering from severe intraventricular hemorrhage. Due to germinal matrix bleeding and an increased risk of hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid in the brain), the newborn required urgent medical intervention. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the neurosurgery and anesthesiology teams at Hakim Hospital, the infant’s life was saved.

During the procedure, for the first time at this center, a specialized device known as a Ventricular Access Device (VAD) was implanted in the infant’s brain to allow the drainage of excess cerebrospinal fluid without the need for repeated surgeries.

The surgical and anesthesia process was successfully carried out under the supervision of faculty members of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, including Dr. Parastoo Ariana (Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship), Dr. Farnoosh Tavakkoli (Anesthesiologist), and Dr. Maryam Ahmadi (Neurosurgeon).

Fortunately, the infant regained consciousness after the operation and is showing promising signs of recovery. Following the surgery, the baby was transferred to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where close monitoring is being provided by Dr. Afsaneh Alimohammadi (Neonatologist). The baby’s general condition has been reported as stable and satisfactory.

This achievement marks yet another milestone for the medical team at Hakim Pediatric Hospital in their commitment to caring for the tiniest of patients.
