The Ambassador of Afghanistan met with the Chancellor and the Vice-chancellors of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

According to the Office of Public Relations in the Vice-Chancellor of Global Strategies and International Affairs, in the meeting on May 18th, 2019, Dr. Shabani, the Director of International Affairs and Development, Jamal Ansari, Scientific and Student Advisor of the Embassy of Afghanistan in Iran, and Dr. Mirzaei, the Responsible for the Iran-Afghanistan Cooperation and the Supervisor of International Marketing and Recruitment were present.

In the beginning, Dr. Karimi mentioned the 170 years history of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and said: “ About 85 years ago, with the establishment of Medical School a new era in Medical Education in Iran began.”

He stated that: “ TUMS is the oldest and biggest Medical University in the country in the number of students, faculty members, and medical services. It’s been the first Medical Research Center in Iran for 15 years.”

He also described the relationship between Iran and Afghanistan very close especially in cultural and historical aspects and said: “ It’s been asked from the TUMS Vice-Chancellor to expand the cooperation in recruitment of students, education, and joint research activities.”

Dr. Karimi also mentioned the importance of the return of the Afghan Medical Students to their home country and stated that: “ Of course, Afghan students in Iran and other neighbor countries are more likely to go back to their home country which emphasizes the importance of the expansion of cooperations and educational relations.”

Dr. Kordi briefly talked about the capacity of TUMS and said: “ Many prominent professors in Medical Sciences, are TUMS graduates.”

He also added: “ TUMS has more than 12000 students, which 870 of them are international students. There are 58 Afghan students in TUMS, and we have the expansion of cooperations between Iran and neighbor countries, especially Iraq and Afghanistan, in our plan.”

He also talked about the agreement of TUMS for different Medical fields according to Afghanistan needs such as Nursing and Public Health in the condition of group applications by Afghan students.

Ahmad Haroon Najm Pour, the Ambassador of Afghanistan in Iran, also thanked for this opportunity to meet with TUMS Chancellor and stated that: “ Medical Education is now the major need for Afghanistan, and according to Iran's acceptable place in this field, we are pleased to use the experience and knowledge of this country.”

He also mentioned 40 Associate Degree Midwifery Graduates who want to apply for TUMS and asked for the needed cooperation from chancellor and vice-chancellors of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

In the end, Dr. Mirzaei, the Responsible for the Iran-Afghanistan Cooperation and the Supervisor of International Marketing and Recruitment and Mr.  Ansari, Scientific and Student Advisor of the Embassy of Afghanistan in Iran, follow up on academic cooperations of two countries.

Before this, the Ambassador and the Scientific and Student Advisor also had a brief meeting with Dr. Nikbakht Nasrabadi, the Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the board of directors, and department leaders of this school.

Dr. Nikbakht Nasrabadi introduced the School of Nursing and Midwifery and hoped, this meeting will be the beginning of more educational and research cooperations with Afghanistan.

He also mentioned that this school is ready to hold long and short term courses for different fields of Nursing and Midwifery.

The Ambassador of Afghanistan in Iran said: “ One of the major needs in Afghanistan is Midwifery education, and I hope that the directors cooperate for this field.”
