Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) signed a memorandum of understanding online to develop scientific, educational and research interactions.

This MOU was signed by the officials of both universities on April 6, 2022 during an online meeting.

In this meeting, Dr. Ghanaati, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Ayati, TUMS Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, Dr. Nekoofar, TUMS Director of International Relations, Dr. Sabzevari, Head of Desk for International Cooperation between TUMS and Malaysia, and Dr. Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, IIUM Rector, and a group of IIUM University officials were present.

Also Dr. Mohammadi, Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr. Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, IIUM Rector, Mr. Mohd Nizam Halimi, First Secretary and Chargé d'Affaires of the Malaysian Embassy in Iran were the guests of the meeting and ceremony.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Ghanaati, TUMS Chancellor, while congratulating the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan and expressing satisfaction with the opportunity to develop joint cooperation with IIUM, said: “The conclusion of this memorandum will be a new chapter in the interactions of the two groups in the fields of education, research, technology and information exchange.” He also gave an overview of TUMS and some of the capacities of the university.

Then, Dr. Abdul Razak congratulated the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan and said: “I hope that in the near future there will be conditions for a face-to-face meeting of university officials, because with the knowledge we have of TUMS, especially in the fields of science and technology, we are sure that there are many opportunities for cooperation and interaction between the two universities.”

He added that in addition to joint educational programs, both universities should cooperate in the field of research, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, with the approach of transferring knowledge and experiences gained.

Then, Dr. Nekoofar explained the purpose of the university in establishing scientific cooperation desks with different countries and introduced the Desk for International Cooperation between TUMS and Malaysia and Dr. Omid Sabzevari, a well-known professor of pharmacy, as its head. Dr. Nekoofar described reaching this agreement as a result of Dr. Sabzevari's efforts and hours of expert work, holding online meetings and numerous correspondences, and asked the embassies to support its implementation.

Dr. Nekoofar’s speech was followed by Dr. Sabzevari, who thanked the staff of the TUMS directorate of International Relations and the Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia for their valuable efforts towards establishing relations between the two universities.

Afterwards, Dr. Mohammadi, Iranian ambassador to Malaysia, made a short speech and expressed his pride in attending the meeting and said: "Fortunately, in the last two years, a lot of cooperation has been established between Iranian and Malaysian universities and about 20 MoUs have been signed."

Dr. Mohammadi added: "I hope the conclusion of the Memorandum of Understanding between TUMS and IIUM will create a new platform in cooperation between the two countries and the governments of Iran and Malaysia will support it."

Following Dr. Mohammadi, Mr. Mohd Nizam Halimi, First Secretary and Chargé d'Affaires of the Malaysian Embassy in Iran, while expressing support for the ties formed, expressed hope that this memorandum would pave the way for the development of scientific and research cooperation between Iran and Malaysia.

At the end of the meeting, officials from the two universities signed the MoU.
