New Global Ranking for Iranian universities

Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) is named among the 5 Iranian universities announced by U-Multirank, which is a global ranking system publishing its results for the first time.

Names of 5 Iranian universities are mentioned in the list of a universal ranking system called U-Multirank announcing its results for the first time. The system analyzes educational, research and international indicators and regional interactions. U-Multirank project has been designed with the cooperation of several organizations including Centre for Science and Technology Studies from Leiden University (CWTS), Centre for Higher Education in Germany, etc., for the purpose of developing a multidimensional ranking system. Results of the said ranking, which includes over 850 universities and institutions of higher education from 74countries of the world, have been published for the first time. Being multidimensional, user oriented and internationally transparent, this ranking system is different from other higher education rankings. It also meets the needs of various addressees and beneficiaries including professors, students, managers, policy makers in different levels, financial supporters, commercial leaders, researchers and the public.

This project aims at development of a ranking system, considering all aspects and the heterogeneous nature of universities worldwide. In addition to concentrating on research, the project evaluates universities in regard with their education and learning, research, knowledge transfer, regional interactions, and international orientation, consisting of a multidimensional ranking system and 4 ranking in the fields of business studies, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and physics. The ranking system includes universities inside and outside the European Union and universities of the US, Africa, Australia and Asia. Web of Science, Scopus, information received from institutions, student survey and websites of registering patents if need be, are the sources for data collection in the ranking system. In this context, survey results are not the same as reputation survey applied by Times or QS. Indexes of the said ranking system include 5 general features of education and learning, research, knowledge transfer, regional interaction, and internationalization. 5 Iranian universities named University of Tehran, Sharif University of Technology, Tarbiat Modarres University, Amirkabir University of Technology, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) are ranked in the first U-Multirank system in 2014.

According to the Caretaker of Islamic World Science Citation Center (ISC), the said ranking system has been presented in three frameworks of “student  track”  , “compare  track”  , and “at a glance”. 136 Asian universities participated in student survey ranking, among which are Amirkabir University of Technology, Sharif University of Technology, University of Tehran, Tarbiat Modarres University, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS).

Also, 140 Asian universities attended comparative ranking among which are Amirkabir University of Technology, Amirkabir University, University of Tehran, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS).
