Ramadan
Ramadan is a month of fasting, a practice which is obligatory for every adult Muslim (except those who may be exempted due to certain circumstances such as having an illness) during this period. In this month, people fast for almost a whole day, immediately after sunrise until and after sunset prayer time. Muslims must refrain from eating and drinking, as well as avoiding any sinful act such as swearing. Ramadan is known as a time of self-control, not only controlling one’s appetite but also controlling one’s behavior, thoughts, deeds etc.
During Ramadan, it is a common practice to have a meal before sunrise. After sunset prayers, friends and families come together at the Iftar table, where they break their fast. Iftar tables are usually colorful with various types of food and sweets served.
The last day of Ramadan is known as Eid al-Fitr. On this day, fasting is forbidden, and Muslims are advised to visit their friends and relatives, hold festivities and enjoy their time after a month of fasting and observance.
This year, Ramadan starts sometime around June 28 and ends approximately July 28, though the exact beginning and ending of this month in any given region depends on the sighting of the moon at a certain time by religious authorities of that region.
