The 6th USERN Workshop: Scientific Writing
Purposing on the promotion of scientific knowledge in the matters of research and academic publication, Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN) has attempted to organize educational workshops, in basic and advanced levels, based on the areas covered and the target population of each workshop. To date, 5 USERN workshops have been held including Scientific Writing, Systematic Review and Meta-analysis, SPSS, Introduction of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Integrated Medicine, and more recently Publishing Academic Books in Collaboration with International Publishers.
Highly welcomed by the audience in the first course, the 2nd Scientific Writing Workshop is going to be held with collaboration of USERN and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), which will be the 6th USERN Workshop in general. The workshop targets senior and junior scientists who are interested in academic research and plan to publish scientific papers.
Notably, the workshop will be instructed in English Language in order to make it more easily understandable for international students.
Areas Covered:
After a brief introduction on scientific writing, the Study Pyramid including different types of papers and their respective characteristics, as well as types of medical articles will be discussed. The technical notes in selecting proper topics and attractive titles will be pointed out; and different parts of a scientific manuscript (authors and address, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, etc.) will be instructed after. The key points of referencing in the manuscript and references systems will be covered as well. Importantly, the principles of Ethics in Publication, Copyright, Plagiarism, and authorship will be then discussed in the workshop. In the next step, technical issues in submitting a manuscript, selecting proper journal for each paper and also scientometrics indices (impact factor, citations, H-index) will be explained. And finally, the process of reviewing a manuscript, from submission to acceptance and publication, will be reviewed.
Interestingly, the workshop will include interactive tasks in order to make the instructions more practical and understandable for the participants.
Workshop Organizing Details:
Instructor: The workshop will be instructed by Dr. Nima Rezaei, the Vice Dean of International Affairs in the School of Medicine, who has published over 600 academic papers and several academic reference books.
Date and Time: The workshop will be held on Wednesday, July 19th, 2017 from 15:00-19:00.
