What is a Cotutelle PhD Program?

A Cotutelle PhD Program is a program within which a doctorate candidate jointly enrolls in two Cotutelle Partner Universities, spends half time at each university, and is supervised jointly by two supervisors from each university to successfully complete the program. Upon the successful completion of the program, the doctorate student will be graduated from both universities and will finally receive two degree certificates from each university.

Cotutelle Program Availability

TUMS Cotutelle is limited to the PhD Programs. TUMS Cotutelle Program is not open to Master‘s or Bachelor’s students.

Candidate Eligibility

Current or future TUMS PhD students must read the below guidelines to see if they are eligible to do a Cotutelle PhD Program.

PhD by course candidates are eligible if:

  • They have taken the subsequent comprehensive exam

  • Their GPA is above 17 according to Iranian Academic Grading

  • They have at least one published paper in recognized journals such as PubMed and ISI

  • Student’s proposal has been pre-defended at TUMS

  • They already have their IELTS Score (above 6.5, with each component above 6) or its equivalent in TOEFL iBT (above 92) or TOEFL CBT (above 237).

PhD by research candidates are eligible if:

  • They have passed 18 compulsory credits.

  • Their GPA is above 17 according to Iranian Academic Grading

  • They have at least two published papers in recognized journals such as PubMed and ISI

  • Student’s proposal has been pre-defended at TUMS

  • They already have their IELTS Score (above 6.5 , with each component above 6) or its equivalent in TOEFL iBT (above 92) or TOEFL CBT (above 237).

TUMS PhD students who do not meet the above criteria can still be financially supported for their six-month sabbatical leave.

Finding Supervisors

Current TUMS PhD students who find themselves eligible according to the above mentioned criteria should find one supervisor from each university who agrees to co-supervise him/her, finalize the proposal and pre-defend it in TUMS in order to be able to start the application process.

Cotutelle Agreements

TUMS needs to sign a general Memorandum of Understanding and a Cotutelle PhD Program Agreement with other universities to officially recognize them as Cotutelle Partner Universities.

Thesis Submission

Students who are doing a Cotutelle PhD Program are required to submit a single thesis which has been co-supervised to each university for an independent examination. The Cotutelle student and the supervisors are required to make skype/phone calls on a regular basis to ensure that the student is properly supervised toward the completion of the thesis.

If a TUMS student has found a supervisor in a university which is not TUMS Cotutelle Partner University, he/she should contact the Directorate of International Relations, via dira_gsia@tums.ac.ir. The mentioned Directorate will check the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with this potential future partner and legalize the request and the procedure.

Cotutelle PhD Program MoUs should be signed by the Vice-chancellor for Global Strategies and International Affairs.

Fees and Funding

In Cotutelle PhD Program, each university has its own applicable tuition fee regulations. The tuition fees are payable while TUMS students are on the Cotutelle Partner Campus.

Only the 6 months of the Cotutelle period of TUMS students who participate in the Cotutelle PhD Program are funded by Office of Global Strategies and International Affairs. The six-month study abroad funding is based on the rules and regulations of the Directorate of the Scholarship and Educational Mission.

There are cases where TUMS and a Cotutelle Partner University decide to offer scholarships on a reciprocal basis. Available scholarships will be announced on the website and flyers will be given out to the PhD students.

Available Scholarships

Macquarie University and TUMS have offered five prestigious scholarships to each university’s students on a reciprocal basis. These scholarships cover:

  • Tuition fee waiver up to three years,
  • Monthly stipend while on campus; and,
  • Return economy airfare.
