Course Description:

Introduction to Clinical Pharmacy Practice is an engaging and interactive course designed for undergraduate pharmacy students, introducing them to the dynamic field of clinical pharmacy. This course aims to instill a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and practical skills, empowering students to become confident and compassionate patient care providers.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the Role of Clinical Pharmacists: Explore the evolving role of clinical pharmacists within the healthcare team and their contributions to patient care, medication management, and drug therapy optimization.

  1. Pharmacotherapy Basics: Develop a comprehensive understanding of drug classifications, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, and adverse drug reactions, with a focus on evidence-based treatment guidelines.

  1. Medication Safety and Medication Use Process: Examine the critical aspects of medication safety, including prescription processing, dispensing, administration, and monitoring, to reduce the risk of errors and adverse events.

  1. Patient Assessment and Communication: Enhance communication and patient interviewing skills to gather relevant medical history, assess drug therapy needs, and address patient concerns effectively.

  1. Pharmaceutical Care Planning: Learn the process of creating patient-centered pharmaceutical care plans, incorporating drug therapy goals, monitoring parameters, and potential interventions.

  1. Drug Information Resources: Familiarize students with various drug information resources, enabling them to critically evaluate and apply evidence-based information in clinical practice.

  1. Chronic Disease Management: Gain expertise in managing common chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and hyperlipidemia, by integrating pharmacotherapy with lifestyle modifications.

  1. Acute Care and Emergent Situations: Develop the ability to identify and manage acute medical conditions, emergencies, and drug-related crises in diverse patient populations.

  1. Interprofessional Collaboration: Understand the significance of interprofessional teamwork and communication to enhance patient care and optimize drug therapy outcomes.

  1. Ethical and Legal Considerations: Explore ethical dilemmas and legal issues related to clinical pharmacy practice, including confidentiality, informed consent, and end-of-life decision-making.
