Program Description:
Stem Cell Transplantation is a part of standard treatment for many malignant and nonmalignant disorders. Since this area is high-level, the current training during the clinical Pediatric Hematology/Oncology program is inadequate for those who decided to work in this field. The Ministry of Health and Medical Education of IRAN has approved the Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Fellowship program at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS). This course offers a one-year opportunity for board-certified physicians in the field of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology who wish to pursue further training in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT).
TUMS Pediatric stem cell transplantation center is based at the children’s medical center hospital. This center consists of pediatric HSCT ward, Post-HSCT ward, Apheresis/Photopheresis unit, Cell Processing Lab, Pediatric Cell Therapy Research Center (PCTRC), as well as a wellequipped clean room. The medical team with experience of more than 1500 pediatric and adolescent transplants, including autologous and allogeneic HSCT from related and unrelated donors or haploidentical and umbilical cord blood transplantation, is the most experienced pediatric transplant team in Iran since 2007. This team has acquired extensive experience in providing clinical services and treatment for a variety of malignant/non-malignant hematologic disorders, including Leukemia, inherited abnormalities of RBC, Lymphomas, Severe Aplastic Anemia, solid tumors, Primary Immunodeficiencies, inherited disorders of metabolism, and histiocytic disorders.
Objectives:
The Objective of Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Fellowship program are identifying indications for transplantation, selecting stem cell sources, using donor registries, utilizing different methods of HLA typing and cryopreservation for storing stem cells, administering high-dose chemotherapies, managing bacterial, viral and fungal diseases, and diagnosing and managing acute/chronic GvHD and regimen-related toxicities including Veno-occlusive disease, hemorrhagic cystitis and late complication of stem cell transplantation. Moreover, fellows will get familiar with next-generation transplantation methods, such as immune cell therapy and gene therapy. Fellows are expected to participate in both inpatient and outpatient care settings and to get involved in clinical research projects. They must actively participate in the journal club and conferences.
