Description:

This course is organized to provide an advanced educational experience with increasing responsibility over a 9 month-period in order to develop medical judgment, surgical skills, and demonstrated competence. The training program consists of formal teaching, live demos and clinical experiences. This diploma course is only available for non-Iranian dentists who has obtained their BDS or DDS degree abroad.

Following the completion of the program, participants will be given a certificate as an international diploma in minor oral surgeries. This diploma is not and will not be qualified as a valid work permit in Iran.

Admission Requirements

General Requirement: To apply for this program, you will need to fulfill a number of requirements, which can be found in the Graduate Admission Requirements.

 

Specific Requiremetns: Degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) and/ or Bachelor of Dental Sciences (B.D.S.) by one of the Iranian or foreign universities.

The eligible candidate should have successfully completed an approved DDS program and should be proficient in English or Persian.

The admissions committee consisting of the head of the department, the vice- head for fellowship programs and the vice-head for the international affairs of the department will choose one to two candidates to start the program for the following academic year.

Admission Deadline

Tehran University of Medical Sciences has a rolling application system and reviews student applications all year round.

However, the deadline for the September intake is June 31.

 

Education Fees and Yearly Expenses

The tuition fee is 8000$ which should be paid at the beginning of the program.

Duration: This educational program is 9 months in length, beginning in September and ending in June of the next year.

The trainee must attend the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery in dental school of TUMS 5 days a week from 8 am to 2 pm.

During this educational program applicants are provided advanced clinical education in the field of minor oral surgery. Our education is broad-based and comprehensive providing exposure to almost all aspect of intraoral minor surgeries including:

  • Surgical extractions
  • Impacted teeth
  • Preprosthetic surgeries
  • Periapical surgeries
  • Incisional & excisional biopsies of small intraoral lesions
  • Closed treatment of mandibular fractures
  • Dentoalveolar trauma
  • Odontogenic infections

 

The international fellow will attend weekly seminars, case presentations, and literature reviews offered by the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Course content includes history and physical examinations, local anesthesia, surgery principels, and seminars on case conferences, interpretation of images and review of cases in pre-operative clinic and quality assurance.

 

The international trainee will only observe and assist faculty members and residents of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the evaluation and clinical management of patients needing various oral surgery services for the first three months. After three months feed backs are collected from faculty members and residents. If the overall analysis implies that the trainee is not eligible to continue the course, the program will terminate and the trainee will be granted a certificate of observer ship.

If the overall analysis implies that the trainee is eligible, he/she will be provided gradual clinical responsibility starting from observing and assisting surgeries to autonomous operation under the supervision of the attending staff. The opportunity to perform surgeries autonomously depends on the technical skills, level of training of the candidate and the overall judgement of the attending staff. Approximately 50 percent of the trainee scheduled time will be spent observing and assisting. Emphasis will be placed on diagnosis and multidisciplinary approaches to the care of patients as well as mastering the decision making and operative techniques.
