Program Description
Since 1981 when the first cases of people with HIV/AIDS were diagnosed in the world and since 1986 when the first HIV/AIDS patient was reported in Iran, this infection has rapidly increased in the world and with several years of delay in Iran, and the number of HIV/AIDS patients is considerably increasing. In most developed countries, infectious and tropical diseases is a subspecialty of internal medicine. The internists admitted to the fellowship of infectious and tropical diseases spend a quarter of their fellowship course on HIV/AIDS. In Iran, infectious and tropical diseases is a specialty with a year devoted to the internal medicine and not enough time left for dealing with HIV. Given that most people with HIV/AIDS are referred to some specific academic centers, the residents of other universities do not receive the necessary education on HIV/AIDS patients. Therefore, the infectious disease specialists who are not adequately able to manage these patients are required to receive further training. Thus, the curriculum development committee developed this curriculum, and welcomes the experts’ valuable comments for revising it.
